The Thing about Poultry

I am looking for a saddle (I know, I know. I'm crazy) so I'm tooling around on craigs list and I come across this:

Free Rooster (Hutto)

If you are brave enough to come catch my rooster you can have him for free.
He is mean and the kids are scared of him, he is 10 months old.

Gosh. All the chickens on blogs looks so cute! Is there natural chickenship for rooster training?

To catch any poultry, go in the evening to where they roost. After roosting they are very mellow and you can catch them easily. Grab his legs (wear a glove) and quickly turn him upside down. Once he is hanging head-down he will submit even more. Tie his legs together with twine and put him in a dark bag or box. I think the next step would be to have his spurs removed at the vet. He would still be aggressive after that but at least he cant injure anyone.

Some roosters are horribly vicious. We had one that you had to take a broom into the pen with you, to beat him off with. He was delicious.

LOL, I wouldn't advise trying it, although if it didn't work out, you could always eat him. I've never been a bird person but it seems that lots of attention and TLC early on can go a long way in making a great pet chicken. As far as rehab, hmmmm?

We have seen some hilarious posts on Craigslist! And - believe it or not, that's how we found both Bernard and Ellsworth. We got really lucky. :)

I've heard of roosters that turn mean. We had one when I was a kid actually. I know they are all different, but yes, training is important. Even Sid Vicious, our Polish Roo has tried to boss me around when I've come in to pet my sweet hens.
I set him straight right away....and tossed him as far as I could throw him. Sounds harsh, but when you're dealing with 3-4" sharp hooked spurs you can't mess around.
That was last summer and Sid never chalenges me anymore. He stays out of my way and I don't give him a hard time either. Well except to trim his spurs. It's easy to do and no different than trimming a dog's claws.
He's a good boy and takes great care of 'his' hens...and he's terrific eye candy for me. lol!

I think the key to have well behaved roosters is dealing with bad behavior as soon as it happens.

Catching can be tougher with roosters because, unlike hens they don't have the instinct to squat down to be bred when petted. They are also very watchful because of their instinct to protect their flock from danger.

I spend a lot of time with my flock though, so they are used to me hanging out in their coop. Some folks wait until their chickens are asleep before trying to catch them, but all I have to do is reach down to pet them or hand feed them a treat, and then pick them up.

The two roosters I just gave away, both 6 months old...so not much younger than the 10 month old rooster in that CL ad, were friendly and well behaved with me....but were wearing my poor hens ragged. So sadly, they had to go.

That's funny. When I was a kid I boarded my pony at a stable that had a mean rooster that would chase us. It was like something out of a horror movie. It had big spurs on its legs and we were all scared to death of it when it started running at us. And it knew we were scared, otherwise it probably would have ignored us.

Guess I haven't spent much time on Craig's list so I don't know how you got from shopping for a saddle to finding vicious roosters. LOL

As far as fixing the rooster, no tips here. I'm still in the horse category.
