Round pen slide show

It started innocently. I took a few pictures of Sierra on Lily riding bareback in the round pen. Then she took the controls and snapped cell phone shots of our round pen session.

So here it is, the whole silly session, with Smokey full of himself, bucking and tearing around, high snooty headed at times. I picked up the whip to let him know it was time to get serious.

But I was thinking back to a McKnabb round pen session he had with his horse, Stormy on RFD TV. He said "Don't get all worked up about that stuff. Don't take the horse out of him."

Anyway, it was fun. Warning, it's 3 minutes long. And ignore that red patch on my jeans. It's my quirky way of patching pants. :)

I thought at first Smokey would be bucking with you riding him. I agree with McNabb. All I saw was a young horse getting some energy out. When we round pen our horses we aren't concerned if they kick up their heels at the beginning - as long as they're not kicking at us.

Looks like a good day. Thanks for sharing.

I really enjoyed that slideshow. Bareback riding is the best! I also just LOVED seeing your horse running and jumping....it is just beautiful!!!

Hah! Love Smokey's LEAP!

The video was great, especially the last 30 seconds or so. That last photo...so sweet!

I also like the music...reminded me of Native American or Peruvian flute. What was it?

Looks like your horse is a rabble rouser, just like you!

I enjoyed that video too, and especially the '80s music. ;-)

I agree with the "don't take the horse out of them" comment. Piper always has to kick up her heels initially in the round pen and act a little silly...then she settles down and we get to work.

Ankles would be up to reading the giant rabbit book. We read together on the floor every morning. Well,,,she reads AFTER petting and then I chew stuff or bunch my towels.

Wow-There were some awesome shots in there. Much better let Smokey get those kinks out on his own-LOL.

I agree. There's nothing wrong with letting horses play. Your round pen looks a lot nicer than mine right now. Tom had to scrap a snow drift away from the gate and now it has a big pile of snow in it.

Breathe, Love the photos! It looks like you are doing good work with Smokey! Letting him play, then getting down to some work, and introducing the ball for variety. It seemed that he liked the ball- did he? Great work and great photos!
