Quick Update - Fire still burning - and a mixed blessing

image from KUT News - shot at a livestock auction

At last report 1554 houses have been lost. People are living in hotels, kids are getting back to school today with school buses picking them up at the grocery store. Last I heard, everyone I know has evacuated their animals. But here's a story about a woman who lost one horse, but her mare survived somehow, with burns over half her body (click here, but warning, the video shows the mare, "hell bitch", recovering and is tough to see).

The fire is 60% contained, 34,000 acres have been burned and two people lost their lives. The drought is refusing to let up and the only chance for rain is Sunday. Hopefully the wind will stay quiet and they can stop this fire - the worst we've ever had in Texas.

Life around here has undergone another change, a mixed blessing. My husband found a good job and it looks like we'll be on the road to recovery from our own kind of drought.

Here's the mixed part. The job is in Ft. Worth. Fortunately the company I work for is based in Dallas, and they would likely welcome me there. In six months we'll be assessing whether or not it makes sense to move, at least temporarily. I don't want to move, but I don't want my kids to have a weekend Dad either.

Still, this IS a great blessing, he's very happy and feeling so much better about himself. Not working is harder on men, IMHO, because so much of their self worth is tied to being "a provider." I'm so glad he found what is, for him, a dream job.

But this is really going to limit my horse time since I've lost 50% of my support system here at home. Somehow we'll get through, but if you have any tips, I'd love to hear them. And if you know anyone who might rent a horse property in the area around May 2012, I may be in the market...

Smokey and Lily are doing well, and send their regards to all of the e-herd out there.

Congrats to your husband. It's so hard to find any job at all, and for him to find his dream job is very fortunate. Hopefully, all the inconveniences that go along with the change in distance will work themselves out quickly and smoothly. I wish everyone could get back to having normal lives without constantly being under the threat of losing their jobs, their homes, their horses...

I'm very sorry for the loss of human and animal life that this fire has caused; and for the loss of homes. I hope the Balstrop mare makes a full recovery. I'm glad you and your family & critters are safe.

Big congratulations on your husband's new job! You've endured your personal drought well.

I hope you get rain sooner than Sunday.

Good news about the job, although hard to move. Very scary about the fires and the drought - hope things improve soon.

It's hard, but he's not very far away really. When I start feeling sorry for myself I think about military spouses - they're so young and their spouses are SO far away. Shoot me an email if you want to commiserate.

A job and one he is excited about... Excellent. Everything else will work out! I wish you rain Sunday, if not before.

So horrific that those fires have affected so many humans, animals and property. I sure hope the rain falls soon and the fires die out so no more lives are affected.

I'm so happy for your family that your hubby found a job and he's looking forward to it. I agree about it being difficult on the man because he tends to be breadwinner in most families, too. We've had our share of job loss over the years and it is never easy and is a huge strain on the entire family.
I'm sure it is such a relief to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
As a family who does have a weekend Dad, I can say that it's not that bad. It's certainly much easier than when my hubby was doing the truck driving job for over a year. We'd be lucky then to see him once a month for a day or two.
And it's got to be easier than what the military families go through when they sacrifice a spouse to serve for a year or more overseas.
You'd be amazed at how well kids adapt and how it makes the reunions oh so much sweeter.

My hubby has been working in Phoenix for over 6 months now and he's home for 2-3 days every week. It's always a big deal when he comes home because we use that time so much better than if he was home 24/7. We usually plan a fun dinner and some kind of activity we can do together as a family each week when he comes home....for us that's usually camping, hiking, letterboxing, playing games, going to the park, playing sports and video games....and so on. Whatever the kids want and we enjoy together. It's serious quality time over quantity time.

As you say, a mixed blessing, but I'm sure you will work it out. Incredible fire photo, and so sad for those who are affected by it. I think I'll skip the video.

Congrats to your husband! That's awesome.

Wow that sucks about the fires though. :( That would scare me so much. I'm glad you're family and horses are safe. I hope everyone who was affected are doing okay.
